African national teams have grown in stature in recent years, as have individual players who now compete in the top leagues around the globe. Players such as Eto’o, Bassong, Foe, Milla, Prince, Essien, Drogba, Gervinho, Toure Yaya, Ba, Cisse, Aboutrika, Zidan, Diouf, Adabayour, and many others.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is the FIFA body representing 54 full member nations or states. CAF has six regional zones (Africa being a huge continent).
Leading nations in recent years have been (in alphabetical order) Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, and Zambia. With strong showing recently from Mali, Nigeria, Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa,
The Africa Cup of Nations is held every two years. Sixteen teams usually compete. In 2012 the tournament was hosted in Gabon & Equatorial Guinea with Zambia defeating Côte d'Ivoire 8-7 on penalties after a goalless final. The tournament will be hosted by South Africa in 2013 as the tournament moves to odd years (2013, 2015, 2017, etc) to avoid clashing with the World Cup.
